A very happy new year from the Edge of Obedience team! We’d like to take the opportunity to welcome back all of you who’ve been following our project, and give a quick recap of events to people just looking at the website for the first time.
So far on this site….
We’ve shared a number of interviews with the crew members including the film’s director and producer, Jin-Theng Craven, co-producer and co-director Yin Phua and cinematographer Annemarie Lean-Vercoe. We’ve also taken a close look at a number of Zakii’s pictures and explored the motivations behind them: in many respects they serve as encapsulations of his own philosophy on life. We hope that by taking a look at the written content we’ve produced, you’ll have a good idea of the kind of man Zakii is – and why we’re so keen to make a film on him.
So far on the film project…
Last year we went out on location to Johor Bahru in Malaysia, and came back with a substantial amount of exciting film footage! We nailed down revealing interviews with the artist, his sister Zainah and cultural anthropologist friend Eddin Khoo – we’re grateful how generous they were with their time and stories. So much to learn, not only about Zakii’s creative secrets, but also about yesterday’s and today’s Malaysia! Zakii introduced us to communities from a different walk of life in Johor Bahru, and it was humbling to see a relaxed Zakii interacting warmly with people we met along the way. Zakii’s relationships with many individuals here undoubtedly helped us gain the trust of those outside mainstream society, and we feature some of them in our production fundraising trailer, which you can see on the front page.
