Filming in London

Zakii’s LSE talk is far from his first trip to London: we were lucky enough to spend some time with him in London a while back. But we’ll take any opportunity we can to meet with him and we were able to film some wonderful footage whilst out and about. Here’s a quick look at some of the places we visited.

The balcony at the Tate Modern offered us some stunning views of the skyline: St Paul’s cathedral instantly draws the eye.

The Leake Street Graffiti Tunnel was created back in 2008: it’s a space where artists can legally express themselves through the medium of graffiti. Despite that tacit acceptance of the craft it’s still a place with an unhinged and unorthodox spirit: filming Zakii here drew out some interesting parallels we can’t wait to explore in the finished film. And just look at the colours!

Another angle on the tunnel: from this perspective it’s interesting how the artists have given a little space to some of the larger murals. Proof that rebellion and respect don’t have to be at loggerheads with one another, even if you’re going to have some people thinking otherwise: looking at you, Mr GERGO!

Rajmallah Sweets in Brick Lane was something of an impromptu space for an interview, but like much of London it bursts to life on camera and off it. A fan of Brick Lane and its history, we get a glimpse here of Zakii feeling right at home despite being halfway around the world. We hope our London footage will serve as a nice contrast to the footage we film elsewhere.

Through these pictures, we aim to give you a real sense of place and indicate how Zakii and his artwork straddle continents and cultures. From the dark alleys of Johor Bahru to the bright streets of London, Zakii’s life and our film are a journey that will take in many different places and ideas before drawing to a close. Don’t forget to keep an eye on the site as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages: with several exciting events on the horizon, we guarantee you won’t want to miss a moment!
